VF1000 wheels on the NS400r installation

Post by MarkBevans »

Hello all,
In the middle of restoring my NS400r, and faced with the original wheels needing straightening and serious cleanup. Also my rotors are toast.
As the thought of, of corse is also to put more rubber on the ground. And use newer rotors like the VF1000 offers.

I love the comstar wheel look, wanted insight on the ease of installing a set of VF1000r wheels on the little NS.

Does this wheel fit the NS axle?
Is the rotor spacing the same, front and rear?
Is the sprocket spacing the same on the rear?

Any help much appreciated!!

To play with the VF1000R rims you will be keeping the hub sections of the NS400, so no need to worry about axle diameters or spacers.

Tyre sizes however is a different kettle of fish, you may need to offset the wheel, or both sprockets to clear.

From memory the NS shares the same rotors as one or two 80's Hondas with the Euro Style wheels (VF500FE ?) but I would have to check.

Thanks for your insight. I knew it would be a hassle. I was also thinking bout the vf500r for wheels, but most likely I’ll just rebuild the original wheels. As the Comstar look great on the bike, always loved their look. Much better than the cast wheels on my RD500.
Cheers,

The tyre options for the front will be the limiting factor, but yes, most stick with the original wheels, after restoring them.

Yeah I need to move in that direction of refurbishing the stock stuff, I have a great wheel-smith close by to refurbish the stock stuff. Yet the issue of available rubber is limited and the offerings are slim.

Main issue with restoring the wheel sis the spoke locking nuts. Somebody on this forum has made a dedicated tool.

My wheels are now in the shop being straightened (slight lip bend on each). Because the plating is so good and the run out is 0, we’re just going to clean well and install new bearings. They should be fine. New BT45’s will be in the garage by next week.
