Re: Engine won´t run properly on #1 cylinder

As far as I remember this was due to a "malfunctioning" carb body that was drilled out to 28.5 mm. I believe I had the work redone on another body and everything was ok after that. Probably no relation to your problem....! Had some similar problem occuring last yeara , but for completely different r...

Re: engine work

Hi

If by dreaded problem you mean the problem with jumping out of 2.nd gear, what I found is illustrated in the picture. Rounded of "dogs" where the second gear engages. Had a local guy undercut them for me. Have had no problems since! Good luck!

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

Hi Sorry for not updating this thread. Got the crank back from the UK last fall. All ok with the bearings (had only done 4-5000 km), but the seals were all changed. Got no explanation as to why the two centre seals were shot after that short time/distance...... Pressure test revealed that all chambe...

Re: engine work

Hi, really quiet in here nowadays.... I bought my NS400R 8 years ago, and rebuilt the engine twice. First the entire engine (rebuilt crank, had the problem gears undercut; the second gear IS a problem!!), then rebuilding the top a few years later with Ian´s 444 kit. My NS had also been parked a few ...

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

The crankshaft is probably not the original. I think I sent it off, and got a different refurbished one back... The crankcases are original and in very good shape. Both are marked NZ on the back in white letters. The bike had 43000 km on it when I got it, and I'm quite sure (based on the originality...

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

Nope, not the cylinder gasket in my case. Wish I was so lucky.... :-( Got the engine out to get easier access to all cylinders. Played around with the pressure tester. Cylinder #1 : 1 psi , Cylinder #2 : Holds 5 psi , Cylinder #3 : 3 psi. Any increased pressure applied to #1 and #3 just disappears m...

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

That's very interesting, Mark! Could definitely be the same problem since, since I´m also running the same kit.
Symptoms sound familiar.
Got the RD500 engine on the table at the moment, but I´ll report back any findings on the NS as I get to it.
Thanks for the link!

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

Mark : That´s an interesting post you´re linking to. I´ll have that checked out when I get time to work on it again. I have 2 base gaskets on the NS, as that is what Ian sold with the 444 kit. One std gasket and a #2 gasket in two different thicknesses to alter compression if needed (if I´m remembe...

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

Hi Mark I´m using soapy water to try to locate any leak. Nothing found yet, but air is escaping somewhere....Air doesn't seem so be entering the water jacket; at least no bubbles can be seen. Removed the rotor to get to the left seal, which is countersunk about an inch on the left side. Seems ok, at...

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

I´ve never done a leak test before myself, but wouldn't that mask any leak between #1/#2, #2/#3 or a leak into the gearbox/clutch side of things?

And of course also checked:
- Rubber intake manifold for cracks/leaks.
- Plug for leaks.

Re: Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

A bit puzzled, need help..... :? Working on #1 cylinder; will not hold more than 1psi. Where can air escape, if the rubber inlet manifold and the exhaust side is sealed off completely...? Unable to hear any escaping air anywhere.... Leak tester from twostrokeracelab tested ok. Using small soapwater ...

Rough running on cyl #1, leak down test

Hi Came back the other day after a 700 km long ride on the NS. Engine was running fantastic the whole day; no problem whatsoever. Started the engine a couple of days later, and it immediately misfired on #1. Running hard, "shooting" slightly led me to believe it was somehow running lean all of a sud...

Re: Busted Radiator

Hi

Depends on what you want to pay, of course. I went with one of these from www.RG.500.com a couple of years ago.
Good fit, and larger capacity. Very happy with it!

Re: Engine won´t run properly on #1 cylinder

Ok. Thanks for the advice, Mark and Channel Hopper.
December is a busy month, but I´ll keep you posted on any findings when I start working on her; hopefully in January!
Cheers!
