Adjusting a Carb that maybe Too Rich

Post by Straycat »

Hi All, seems my top cylinder still has a stutter/4cycling going on.

On cold start up, the top cylinder runs better (not perfect) than it does after warm up. Once warmed up, I get very little smoke and a distinct stutter/4cycle when its revv'd up. Top pipe is also not heating up as fast as the other 2

As I understand it, stutter and 4 cycling say that there is a distinct possibility that i may be too rich on the top cyl.

Carbs are all synced and the mix screw is set the same on all cyl according to the manual

what adjsutments are possible, is there just the one mixture screw that I can turn in to lean it out a bit ?

im also about to pull the carbs off again to clean them, and will check that the choke circuit isnt sticking open

Thanks for any replies

Rich would give you more smoke wouldn't it? No harm in rechecking the carbs. Do a breakdown test whilst you have it stripped.

Whats a Break Down test Alastair ?

Everything Ive searched on the Stutter /4cycle suggests any 2 strojk thats getting too much fuel will 4 cycle/stutter. Good point on the smoke though, maybe its electrical and not fuel.I have a new Coil/HT Wirre and Cap on the way for the Top cyl just in case.

Any other ideas ?

Thanks

Sorry - leak down (autocorrect in action methinks). To check the condition of the bottom end seals. If they're leaking, then the thing will run poorly. With the age of these bikes, it can be a case of more than one issue. Leakdown is an easy test to do with the carbs and pipes off.

Yes, i did one no long after i got it (10 miles on it since then), all good. Only 2000km on the bike since a full rebuild (prior owner had the rebuild done, all NOS Honda parts)
